19th century KEEN KUTTER HONING STEEL

This sharpening steel is a classic accoutrement of the American West movement and will fit well as a companion with representative pieces of the mid to late 19th century railroad expansion and buffalo hunting activity that has become synonymous with the “Wild West”. Measuring nearly 19” in over all length this steel is fitted with an eye appealing hand crafted and well worn hardwood grip with heavy cast in pewter non-slip design. Most importantly to the cutlery and American West collector are the bold KEEN KUTTER maker marks deeply set in the shaft of the steel. Founded in St. Louis in 1868, the E. C. Simmons Hardware Co. grew into one of the classic suppliers supporting Western expansion. The “KEEN KUTTER” nomenclature used by founder Simmons remains well known today and is a base in the cutlery collecting field with early examples such as this commanding special interest. please note: ALL ITEMS ARE CURRENT & AVAILABLE UNLESS MARKED SOLD!!. CIVIL WAR era SPIRITS BOTTLE

A classic heavy black glass bottle of the Civil War era. All original and period, in the style we so frequently find in period photographs and in all too often damaged condition from excavations of Civil War camp sites. This example stands 9" high and is a nice clean non excavated example with no chips, flakes or cracks. We see them referred to both as ale and as whiskey bottles (you can decide) and so will side step that one by calling it a "spirits" bottle. CIVIL WAR ERA BRASS CANDLESTICKS

An attractive pair of classic Civil War style spun brass, sand weighted candlesticks. All original and standing approximately 5 3/8" high, this pair will polish up well though we think that would be a shame and so have left such bad acting to the choice of the new owner. With only the slightest bit of evidence of period use and a very light age patina after years of attic chest storage, these sticks are an attractive pair with lots of charm. Until it was unfortunately broken up, an example of this style was, for many years included in the old Gen. Robert E. Lee Headquarters Museum collection in Gettysburg. please note: ALL ITEMS ARE CURRENT & AVAILABLE UNLESS MARKED SOLD!!. Civil War PATENT DATE WINDOW-SASH LOCK

As new and un-used just as it would have been installed, is this neat little gadget that many mid 19th century home owners will recognize. (Except this one is without the usual several layers of milk then oil base paint.) These little friction locks(illustrated here with a U.S. quarter for size comparison) were installed with a single flat head wood screw on the inner vertical sash of the old weighted multi pane windows. An easy push on the turned lever (except when it was clogged with vintage paint) would secure the window closed or hold it up so the fresh air could pass. A neat "whatís it" for the Americana and Civil War collector. Nicely Patent marked in the casting PAT. SEPT. 23, 1862. please note:

Each measures approximately 3" X 3 7/8" and was rescued from a badly damaged ladyís sketch book of the same size and period. The little leather bound sketch book that housed these eye appealing drawings was of American origin but the drawings offer a European flavor reflective of the social trend of the well to do of the period. Civil War era PATRIOTIC BADGE

This sequined gold bullion patriotic star badge measures approximately 1 3/4" across and is absolutely original and in nice condition,. (We also have a small quantity of the die struck brass type. Item # 807) Such patriotic embellishments were popular in the patriotic fervor of the Civil War and were frequently worn by uniformed military and civilian alike either singularly as seen here or stitched to rosettes or colorful ribbon. (We have included some period examples of such use in our illustration.) On the brest or as a collar or hat embellishment, these fanciful stars were relatively fragile and infrequently survived. Of special interest to Confederate collectors, these sequined embellishments are best known today for there use as insignia of rank on regulation Confederate uniforms (see: Museum of the Confederacy collection, Richmond). An example of this type may be seen in the Schuyler, Hartley & Graham Military Goods Catalogue of 1864. A nice all original period item at a reasonable price. We have a small quantity of these acquired from storage and so can offer more than one if you desire. please note: ALL ITEMS ARE CURRENT & AVAILABLE UNLESS MARKED SOLD!!
