25th Illinois – Civil War Soldier’s Meerschaum Tobacco Pie

Illustrated with a US quarter for size comparison, our photos will offer the best description of this neat personal artifact except to advise the obvious. Simple in its form and heavily smoked in the period, this every day common man’s pipe offers good evidence of considerable period use and handling with an attractive natural age patina as testimony to its age and originality. With the well-worn period scratch engraved first initial and last name E. Kuar on one side and three initials E. H. K. with 25th Inf. on the other we are able to identify the period owner as Pvt. Elijah H. Kuar . An East Bend, Illinois resident, Kuar enlisted on August 5,1861 as a Private of Co. I 25th Illinois Infantry and was mustered out with the 25th on September 5, 1864. During Pvt. Kuar’s tenure with the 25th Infantry his hard fought Regiment saw action at the battles of Pea Ridge, Stones River, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, Kennesaw Mountain, Atlanta and Peach Tree Creek. rare original! 1863 Civil War Union League - Political Pamphlet – The Loyalist’s Ammunition

This rare original, 1st edition of The Loyalist’s Ammunition by Isaac Funk was published in wraps in 1863 by the Union League of Philadelphia. ( Widely republished even today as an important but infrequently discussed Civil War political commentary, we suggest that full appreciation of the content will best be appreciated with a Google search and a read of the original text.) Remaining complete and solid with no condition issues, while offering good evidence of period originality, the 16 page political pamphlet offers some fiery commentary on what aggressive loyalists saw as a challenge to the Union cause, even traitorous interference, emanating from factions within the Union this pamphlet offers seven individual works including a speech given at the Illinois Legislature, resolutions from a meeting of the 150th Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers, and several newspaper excerpts. The topics include traitors in the Illinois legislature, protest against foreign interference, and opposition to the government .

original! Civil War era - BANDAGE ROLL & FOREARM SPLINT

An outstanding Civil War medical display item, this original Civil War vintage surgical splint and accompanying period bandage roll was acquired some years ago when we were fortunate enough to find a Civil War vintage slide top box containing it’s period content of a small number of rolled home spun bandages with original splints. The rolled bandage measures approximately 4 1/ 2 to 5 inches in width and is of period loomed cotton sheeting as was commonly utilized by home front volunteers who came together, particularly in the Eastern textile mill region, to tear and roll strips of available textile for use as bandages. Bandage rolls are secured by an ink stamped and sealed paper band. The splint is fashioned from birch wood ( see: National Civil War Medical Museum in Frederick, Marylandand) with good evidence of period originality and is maker marked E. J. Cutter
The collector / historian will be interested that we were curious enough to sacrificed one of the bandage rolls, opening the paper band to reveal that they are repurposed from Odd Fellow Lodge dues certificates. The one we opened was dated 1849 and was from a Newburyport, Mass. I.O.O.F. chapter. Oddly enough the wood box containing the bandages bore a stenciled Masonic device. Obviously repurposed to band the bandage rolls, it seems more than likely the then obsolete dues certificates were pressed into service by volunteers gathered in the local lodge hall. 19th century SIGNAL HORN

With authentic period examples most frequently encountered on the East coast, (most likely due to its nautical application) these early sounding or signaling horns are well known as having been pressed into Civil War military service and are nearly always in poor, well used condition, dented or crushed with the internal brass reed missing or damaged so as to be inoperable. A classic of the well-used 19th century utility this well constructed, horn measure approximately 16 inches in length and is about 4 inches in diameter at the mouth. While demonstrating unquestionable age and originality, this brass bodied horn demonstrates desirable construction techniques and remains in exceptional original fully operable condition. An answer to a wide varying 19th century communication / signaling applications, a determined blow into the mouthpiece of this period antique sounding horn will produce a blast capable of some distance. Applicable to a variety of applications, these instruments were once a must have in the gear of costal New England fisherman and commercial mariners who put them to good use when they found themselves unexpectedly fogged in while navigating the shore line. A skilled fisherman or nautical captain would estimate his crafts distance from land by the time interval from sounding of the horn to return of the echo from shore. An example of a once relatively common utility seldom surviving today.

War of 1812 period Veteran identified - Straight Razor & Spectacle grouping

All offered here as found in a period ’coffin’ type double straight razor case, is this early stub-tail razor with accompanying late 1700s early 1800s iron frame spectacles. The razor is mounted in whale baleen scales with a telltale stub tang, indicating the razor was probably manufactured in the 1820-1830s. The blade fits snugly between the scales, shows evidence of period hone wear while remaining keen with no nicks in the cutting edge. The shank is marked CLARK & HALL WARRANTED. The iron framed spectacles are fitted with classic telescoping temples and string tie loops.
Included as folded and housed with the family relics is a descendant note advising that ’ these Spectacles and the razor belonged to your great – great-grandfather Riley He was born in Virginia in 1786 Died in Indiana in 1860’. Innocuous as the information provided seems, an Ancestry.com search for a Riley born in Virginia in 1786 and passing in Indiana in 1860 produced but a single match. He was James Riley who was born Prince William County, Virginia on December 22, 1787 and died on June 22 1860 in Whitley County, Indiana. A notation posted by a descendant offers advises that James Riley moved to Fayette County , Ohio at age seventeen where he married and settled as a pioneer. Relocating to Whitley County in 1843-44 Riley purchased 40 acres of land for himself and each of his four children. The notation advises further that James Riley had been engaged in Indian skirmishes as a soldier in the War of 1812 and that his father Abraham was a veteran of the American Revolution. A neat all original personal grouping worthy of preservation.

CIVIL WAR Medal of Honor - 46th Mass. Vet’s RIBBON GROUP

Offered here from a small cash of Co. A 46th Mass. Regimental Association ribbons emanating from Congressional Medal of Honor winner and association Commander, Andrew S. Bryant are eight ribbons beginning with a fine circa 1880 ribbon that doubled as a pass to the festivities. The ribbon bears the following in gold print on the face Co. A. Association, 46th Regt. M.V.M., sixth annual, REUNION AND CLAM BAKE, at Callup’s Grove, Wednesday, July 21, 1880, show this badge at the boat and tables, STEAMER RIVER BELL, Will leave pier one, foot of State Street, half past one o’clock P. M. sharp. The group contains 5 additional ribbons, one each for reunions held in 1883 – 84 - 88– 1890 and 1895. These ribbons came together from among Andrew Bryant’s things left from when he was Commander of the 46th Mass Veteran Association and are in excellent condition after decades of storage.
Andrew Symmes Bryant was a 21 year old banker in Springfield Mass. when he enlisted and mustered in on August 15, 1862 as a Sergeant of Co. A 46th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. Bryant would be promoted to Sgt. Major and was awarded the Medal of Honor for bravery on the field at the Battle of New Bern, North Carolina on May 23, 1863. His citation reads: The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Sergeant Andrew Symmes Bryant, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 23 May 1863, while serving with Company A, 46th Massachusetts Infantry, in action at New Bern, North Carolina. By his courage and judicious disposition of his guard of 16 men, stationed in a small earthwork at the head of the bridge, Sergeant Bryant held in check and repulsed for a half hour a fierce attack of a strong force of the enemy, thus probably saving the city New Bern from capture.
After the Civil War Bryant returned to Springfield where he was an active member of the Co. A 46th MVM Veteran Association and GAR Post 16. He died on October 6, 1931 and rests in Springfield Cemetery, Springfield, Massachusetts. A really nice Civil War veteran group with association to one of the war’s Medal of Honor recipients. You will be well pleased with the condition of the old man’s ribbons. Our letter of provenance will accompany the group.

7th South Carolina Cavalry ‘Holcombe’s Legion’ - Stirrup with forged Iron Bit

Of interest to the Confederate Cavalry enthusiast, this crudely made make dostirrup bears an obviously period ink notation Picked up at Holcombe’s Legion camp Peter and comes with an iron bit of hand forged black iron. (While the bit could be considered as incidental to the stirrups as they were not acquired together, the crudity of bit is so complementary we are bound to offer the two as a pair.) While not easy to read and more difficult to photograph, the period ink script is discernable under close inspection and is bolstered by a later paper tag noting the original text with the notation ’ Diascund Bridge’ Our research found that , Holcombe's Cavalry was camped above Cole's Ferry at Camp Peter near Diascund Bridge in January and February of 1863. A really eye appealing pair that will fit well in any quality Confederate Cavalry grouping. Buy with confidence! Especially desirable! VIRGINIA MANUFACTORY Confederate Conversion

Another remnant from our decades of scouring the countryside for such treasures, this Confederate altered 2nd Model Virginia Manufactory will be of special interest to the deep dish historian who appreciates unquestionable evidence of hard wartime use while remaining in honest as found and unmolested condition. Pleasing to the eye with an obvious hard fought history, this example from the war’s only state run armory was manufactured in Richmond, Virginia circa 1818 with its original ’RICHMOND 1818’ & ’VIRGINIA / MANUFACTORY’ functioning lock. Fitted with its crude field replacement hammer and hammer screw, the arsenal plate is held in place with one arsenal screw and a period field replacement stud and classic square nut. As part of the war-time conversion (c. 1861/62) the original manufacture brass flash pan was removed with an iron sliverset in place under the braised percussion bolster all reminiscent of the work of W. Morgan in Richmond who altered approximately 700 muskets by contract between February and September 1862. The 69 caliber 33 inch barrel offers an appealing smooth 100% natural age patina with telltale wear at the muzzle as a result of heavy use of an iron ramrod. The barrel is unmarked except for a deeply struck V touch mark at the left breech. The musket retains a shortened to fit Tower ramrod as continued evidence of make-do field circumstance. Dr. John Murphy’s CONFEDERATE RIFLES & MUSKETS offers additional insight into these scarce conversions all of which were contracted for by the State of Virginia to supply its own troops. Dr. Murphy in his work and Virginia historian Giles Cromwell in his Virginia Manufactory of Arms offer good information on early war issue of these arms as flintlocks with a campaign to cycle these muskets back through for update conversion to percussion. Included is specific information pertaining to the shortening of muskets which had damage to their forward portions. The stock was period shortened just forward of the middle barrel band with a crude extensively black iron pinned but sound wrist repair continues to provide evidence of a heavily used arm of the weapons starved Virginia Confederate. These, like other Southern and Confederate arms of the war, were obsolescent weapons subject to extremely hard use such that few exist today. As such this crudely adapted field used Virginia Manufactory is all the more desirable as an artifact of the Civil War Confederacy and the State of Virginia. Buy with confidence!
