original! Civil War era Invalid Corps / Veteran Reserve Corps HAT CORD

This original Civil War wool worsted hat cord retains that rarely seen and desirable light grey-tan color that knowledgeable collectors associate with the earlier Civil War Invalid Corps, re- designated as the Veteran Reserve Corps in 1863. Once fairly common as period surplus (mostly in artillery red) the scarcity of originals, even in the originally more common colors, has fostered manufacture of reproductions for the re-enactor market. We recently acquired a small collection of originals from an old collector friend and are offering them individually to the collector who would like a specific example. As one would expect the vast majority are artillery red with only single examples of the now extremely scarce variations. (use hat cord in our search feature to see other available variations ) This scarce Veteran Reserve Corps cord is fashioned from coarse wool worsted with a distinctive splice in one cord which is indicative of the Bannerman examples. With a considerable amount of War Surplus left in military stores after the Civil War, government agents busied themselves with clearing out surplus stockpiles. If no bulk buyers could be found for a particular item those items would be rendered useless for their intended purpose and sold at a reduced price as scrap or salvage. Closure straps would be cut off cartridge boxes, straps removed from knapsacks, roller buckles cut from leather straps &c. In the case of these wool hat cords, the cord was cut thus allowing use of the cord but taking away the intended use as a hat cord. Many large lots were purchased by Bannerman who promptly spliced the severed cords together with red thread and sold them as hat cords. ) Not to be confused with an infantry cord faded to blue-gray, this original grey-tan Invalid Corps / Veteran Reserve cord is fashioned from that distinctive period worsted wool and remains in excellent as issued condition with the exception of the post Civil War Bannerman splice.

Early steal frame PINCE-NEZ SPECTACLES

Though used in Europe as early as the 16th and 17th centuries the pince-neztype spectacles are thought to have been seldom used in this country until the 1840s. Though popularity of the delicate style grew slowly limited use of these classy spectacles continued through the Civil War and on into the 1880s when used by President Teddy Roosevelt put the pince-nez on the map. The pair offered here are in excellent original condition of fine steel with even to the natural cork remaining on the nose pieces. Though fashioned from the finest high carbon steel of the day and with the best of workmanship, these earlier through Civil War period pince-nez glasses were quite fragile by nature of their design seldom surviving without broken and or missing components. This pair is in excellent complete and functioning condition. Thanks for visiting Gunsight Antiques!!

c. 1846 BITTERS –Label & Handbill - PRINTERS SHEET

This all original uncut printers sheet measures 12 X 18 inches and remains in nice original condition with a pleasing soft age coloration and that classic block printing that leaves an embossed effect telltale of the old printing presses. The sheet contains FOUR LABELS and FOUR HANDBILLS promoting Dr. Israel Newton's JAUNDICE BITTERS & ANTI-BILIOUS BITTERS. This piece is dated 1846 and will go especially well when laid in with a quality Mexican War era grouping. Under a warning against COUNTERFEIT preparations Dr. Israel Newton assures customers that those Bitters which accompany this bill of 1846 and with my name, shall be prepared according to my directions. Dr. Newton informs prospective purchasers that the bitters would be available at Windsor, Vermont, at the shop of druggist M.K. Paine and dates the handbill at Norwich, Vt., January 1846. It is interesting to note the fact that, Dr. Newton lived until 1856 and was, indeed, a trained physician. He served in the American Revolution and was the last surviving veteran of Norwich. A man of diverse abilities, Dr. Newton invented and built an organ which was installed at the old First Church where it served for many years. please note: ALL ITEMS ARE CURRENT & AVAILABLE UNLESS MARKED SOLD!! HARD RUBBER WALKING STICK

One always wonders; is it a cane or is it a walking stick? Actually what is the difference? One of Janet’s relatives was Chaplain of the House of Representatives before the outbreak of the Civil War. I imagine he carried a walking stick. My great grandfather, on the other hand was a simple country blacksmith. He was an enlisted troop in the 17th Maine. I expect he had a cane in his elder years. ( Sorry, I seldom allow myself such wanderings here.) Any way this neat old hard rubber stick is a classic as is sometimes seen with the familiar old Goodyear 1850s patent markings. Though the frequently faint patent markings have been long since worn away on this example, students of Civil War period hard rubber collectables will appreciate its natural age and pleasing evidence of period use and carrying while remaining in excellent condition. U.S. Cavalry - Indian Wars era Watering Bit & Reins

All complete and in unused condition but with good evidence of age and originality the Mod. 1885 watering bit and reins were carried in the trooper’s saddlebags until needed at which time the curb bit and bridle were removed, leaving the halter in place and the watering bit was snapped to both halter squares and the jointed steel mouth piece was inserted. The black leather reins are made in two pieces, sewed together at the center, with the ends sewed to the bit. The reins are 7/8 of an inch wide and 10 ft. long. Bit remains untouched and as found showing a considerable amount of the old bright arsenal blue and will clean to excellent plus with a touch of WD-40 and a knowing hand. The reins are solid with no cracks or weak spots and are soft and pliable with a nice original finish. Like the bit the reins are untouched and will restore to excellent plus with application of a proper leather dressing. Complete and untouched with the reins tied with jute as issued, we would oil the bit and leave the reins as is. . Mid 1800’s Nursing BOTTLE & BOX

All in excellent condition is this antique special purpose bottle with its M. S. BURR & Co. BOSTON nomenclature embossed around an eye catching 11/2 inch American Eagle seal. With the bottle is its stopper fitting for a rubber tube a feeding tip and a cleaning brush. All are original to a nicely labeled pasteboard box with an attractive American eagle graphic. The label offers directions for use and patent dates from 1859 through 1872. The box measure approximately 5 ½ x 4 x 2 ¾ inches high and is a scarce and desirable addition (this is the only example we have seen in our 40 years of paying attention and seeking out such things,) but it deserves a proper restoration where the folds have been reinforced with a modern flat Scotch type tape. (Easily removable without damage by a knowledgeable person .) Though primarily promoted by maker and patent holder M. S. Burr & Co. (see Civil War era Boston Directories) as an infant feeder, their especially designed bottle would surely see use in the period to aid the feeding of bedridden and invalid medical patients. A scarce specialty item seldom if ever found in the original box. As with all direct sales, we are pleased to offer a no questions asked three day inspection with refund of the purchase price upon return as purchased!

Women’s Overseas Service League - Gettysburg Address Narrative

Charles Scribner & Sons, New York, 1918 hard bound publication of The Perfect Tribute by Mary Raymond Shipman Andrews. Considered this author’s best work about Abraham Lincoln, this little forty-seven page book recounts the morning of November 18, 1863, when a special train drew out from Washington, carrying a most distinguished group of dignitaries. In addition to the U. S. Marine Band from the Navy Yard there were judges of the U. S. Supreme Court, governmental department heads, the general-in-chief of the army and his staff and members of the president’s cabinet. Oddly enough the most prominent personage in the group would have seemed out of place to one who would not recognize the towering awkward figure with the sad drawn face of Abraham Lincoln. The party was traveling to Gettysburg to consecrate the new national cemetery there. The authors narrative of the historic occasion is stirring in its simplicity and brevity while offering the reader a special insight not provided in the many other written accounts. Of interest to World War One and women’s history enthusiast will be that this volume bears the markings of the Women’s Overseas Service League library in Paris, France. The Women’s Overseas Service League was formed in the World War 1 era by and for women who served overseas with the Armed Forces. Library marked with natural age and minimal period wear, this offering remains tight and in pleasing condition with no tears, repairs or other condition issues.

Silver Mounted / Decorated - Antique DRINKING GOURD

A bit of a departure for us but too neat to pass up was this attractive hand decorated and silver mounted antique drinking gourd. Standing approximately 3 ¼ inches high and about the diameter of a baseball, this all original decorated drinking gourd dates in the earlier to mid nineteenth century. Deassed from a small maritime museum (see inventory # on bottom) where it had been displayed as an example of early 1800s sailor art from passage around the horn, this piece is actually of South American origin, more specifically Argentina. Our research has told us that the hand carved and paint embellished design on the body of the gourd is from the seal of Argentina’s Constitutional Assembly of 1813. (see illustration) All original and in nice condition with no cracks of flaws this piece offers wonderful rich age patina. – H. B. SCUTT- Barb Wire Mfg. - ADVERTISING ENVELOPE

Not a big deal but worthy of passing along is neat item for the American West and barb wire enthusiast. This early fencing advertising envelope is imprinted H. B. SCUTT & CO., Limited BARB WIRE MANUFACTURERS, PITTSBURG, P.A. with an image of their factory overlaid by an illustration of their famous product. The holder of ten U. S. patents for varieties of barbed wire fencing, Hiram Scutt’s wire fencing would have a major impact on the early open range method of cattle ranching and shaping of the American West. As a young man Scutt joined the Civil War military when he enlisted on September 16, 1861 as Pvt. Battery G, 2nd Illinois Mounted Artillery. Re-enlisting at the end of his initial term on April 5, 1864 and remained with that unit after the Civil War on September 4, 1865. His earliest patents for barbed wire were taken out in 1867. 1863 Maine - FARMER’S ALMANAC

All complete even to the front and back covers, this original 1863 Maine Farmer’s Almanac by Daniel Robinson was printed by Masters, Smith & Co. of Hallowell, Maine. No exception to the popular format of the time, this example offers the typical weather prognostications, phases of the moon, and a variety of good advice that made it a staple of the Maine farmer, fisherman, lumberman, et al. The Maine Farmer’s Almanac offered a welcome piece of home and source of recreational reading when sent to a soldier in the field. A treasure trove of period charm with neat period illustrations, Civil War enthusiasts will be pleased to note a roster of top government officials headed by Abraham Lincoln as President, followed by Maine’s own Hannibal Hamlin as Lincoln’s VP. Published in wraps these soft bound almanacs typically saw heavy use then were cast aside at the end of the year leaving few examples for today’s collector / historian. Well worn with lots of eye appeal in the form of tattered edges and rounded corners from period use but with no missing or loose pages this is a neat display item to augment any period collection. (note: Daniel Robinson edited the Maine Farmer’s Almanac for 42 years from 1822 through 1864 passing away at 90 years of age.)
